We have great water levels all season!
A hydroelectric plant located in Collinsville, right on the Farmington River, has been given a new lease on life! The plant is now using water power from a 19th-century dam that once supplied a factory renowned globally for producing axes, machetes, and other tools. The installation of "crest gates" on the dam was the final touch in this renovation project. These gates raise the river level by about 3 feet and keep the water flowing steadily through the power turbine. And, the icing on the cake is that they will make kayaking above the dam even better! So, thanks to these "crest gates", we can expect to see consistent water levels throughout the season.

It's important for paddlers to dress appropriately for the water temperature, which is generally 10-15°F cooler than the air temperature. To get an idea of the water temperature, you can check the nearest USGS water temperature gauge, which is located in Riverton. We recommend wearing synthetic or merino wool layers instead of cotton, as well as sunscreen or a hat, watershoes or sandals, and bringing a water bottle. If you need any of these items, they are available for purchase in our shop.
